Medical Assistant - Orthopedics

MFM Health is looking for an enthusiastic, patient-focused individual for a Medical Assistant role to support our Orthopedics department. The Orthopedics Medical Assistant plays a pivotal role in facilitating patient care and involves a wide range of responsibilities including preparing exam rooms, rooming patients, performing vital checks, assisting with orthopedic procedures, applying and removing splints/casts, managing patient education, coordinating prescriptions and prior authorizations, and ensuring seamless communication between patients and providers. This role requires strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment while delivering exceptional patient care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Room Preparation and Maintenance:

  • Stock and maintain examination rooms with orthopedic-specific supplies including braces, splints, casting materials, bandages, sterile instruments, and PPE.
  • Ensure all equipment (e.g., casting tools, suture kits) is prepared and functional.
  • Thoroughly sanitize and clean all surfaces after each patient visit.

Patient Educational Material Management:

  • Maintain and distribute educational materials related to orthopedic conditions, post-operative care, injury prevention, and rehabilitation exercises.
  • Provide patients with instructions for brace use, cast care, and recovery protocols.

Patient Rooming and Chart Preparation:

  • Update patient charts with medication lists, allergies, and medical history.
  • Document the reason for the visit, including injury details and symptoms.
  • Prepare charts for provider review, including imaging results (X-ray, MRI, CT scans).

Vital Checks and Clinical Support:

  • Conduct vital checks including height, weight, blood pressure, and heart rate.
  • Assist providers with examinations and in-office procedures such as joint injections, aspirations, and minor surgical procedures.
  • Assist with positioning patients for exams and procedures.

Casting, Splinting, and Durable Medical Equipment (DME):

  • Apply and remove casts, splints, and braces under provider direction.
  • Educate patients on proper use and care of orthopedic devices.
  • Maintain inventory of DME supplies and ensure proper documentation and billing support.

Imaging and Diagnostic Coordination:

  • Assist with coordinating imaging studies and ensure results are available for provider review.
  • Support in-office X-ray workflow if applicable.

Communication and Coordination:

  • Relay patient instructions and follow-up care plans, documenting all communications in patient charts.
  • Coordinate referrals for physical therapy, imaging, and specialty care.
  • Serve as a liaison between patients, providers, and external facilities.

Medication and Injection Support:

  • Prepare and assist with medication administration, including joint injections.
  • Maintain inventory logs for medications and supplies.
  • Document medication administration details, including site, lot number, and expiration date.

Prior Authorizations and Documentation:

  • Coordinate prior authorizations for imaging studies, procedures, and orthopedic equipment.
  • Work with insurance providers and pharmacies to ensure timely approvals.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation for all authorization processes.

Pay Range:

$21/hr - $25/hr; commensurate with experience


Qualifications:

  • Certified Medical Assistant or relevant certification preferred
  • Experience in orthopedics, sports medicine, or surgical specialties preferred
  • Familiarity with casting, splinting, and orthopedic procedures strongly preferred
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently
  • Familiarity with medical software/systems, preferably Athena
  • Understanding of insurance processes and prior authorization procedures
